I-73 Update
A $10 million federal stimulus grant was announced Wednesday that will kick start the interchange at Interstate 95; a move that supporters say is a major boost to the planned highway according to the Sun News on February 18, 2010. This is the Interstate that is going to eventually lead from the Canadian border at Sault Ste., Michigan near the Canadian border to Myrtle Beach, SC. The money will be used to begin work on the I-95 segment of the project that is estimated to cost $300 million. The state has completed most of the plans for the project and it is one of the State’s top priorities for new construction. South Carolina has received about $100 million in federal money over the years for planning and right-of way acquisition.
This would be a major boost to tourism for Myrtle Beach due to it being one of the top drive to beaches in the country. According to the Sun News February 19, 2010 the Strand is approximately 1/3 of the tourism for the state of South Carolina and the I-73 would help us improve this. Approximately half of the country can reach Myrtle Beach by automobile within 8 hours.
