According to AAA Vacations, Myrtle Beach is the second most popular travel destination for drivers over Labor Day weekend. Good news for surfers – the active Atlantic hurricane season has given us larger than usual waves, so grab your board and come to the beach! Need another reason to drive the family down to the sunny seaside for a weekend away? Gas prices continue to fall, with the average price for a gallon of unleaded fuel in South Carolina at $2.44, which is down two cents from a week ago.

Myrtle Beach Puppy Plunge

The Grand Strand Humane Society and Wild, Water & Wheels have teamed up for the first annual Puppy Plunge! This event will take place September 11, 2010 from 10:00am-4:00pm. Let your 4-legged loved ones enjoy the end of the summer with a refreshing dip in Wild, Water & Wheels pools! The park will open a smaller pool for small dogs and a bigger pool for the big dogs. The cost for a dog and a guest is $15 and just a guest is $10; Children 2 and under have free admission. Each guest will receive a hotdog and a soda. A portion of proceeds benefit the Grand Strand Humane Society. So before you put the doggie paddling on the back burner for winter, come and enjoy a day in the sun and water with your canine companion!

Wal-Mart announces they’re opening the 8th Wal-Mart in Horry County starting in October. The 155,147-square-foot store, located at the corner of U.S. 17 Business just south of the Garden City Connector, they will be offering more than 400 positions from sales associates to supervisors; the new hires will hopefully bring relief to the high unemployment rate in the Grand Strand. Known as the world’s largest retailer, Wal-Mart is the largest corporation and private employer in the United States. Wal-mart employs more than 1.3 million associates worldwide through more than 3,200 facilities in the United States and more than 1,100 units in Mexico, Puerto Rico, Canada, Argentina, Brazil, China, Korea, Germany and the United Kingdom. Kicking off the school year

The first day of classes started this past Wednesday for students at Coastal Carolina University in Conway, SC. The university has spent the summer sprucing up campus housing and making improvements for returning students and welcoming the future class of 2014. In efforts to open a safer intersection for students traveling down University Boulevard, a roundabout was added to prevent from traffic delays, decrease number of accidents and to improve pedestrian safety. As the halls grew louder, and parking spaces filled, there was no doubt administration and students were getting geared up for another busy school year. Making a 4% gain in enrollment this fall compared to last years numbers, Coastal estimated a near 8,700 students are currently enrolled in fall semester. Coastal is also attracting non-traditional students such as veterans who want to earn a college degree. Many of them will be working on their studies via distance learning, due to being located in Iraq or Afghanistan. With this, G.I. Jobs Magazine recently named CCU a “Military Friendly School for 2011”, which puts Coastal in the top 15% out of 7,000 schools nationwide who are committed to educating military veterans. In efforts to make a strong push to increase courses and services for veterans, it has also contributed and tripled in participants in the ROTC program at Coastal over the past 2 years. All together, Coastal Carolina improvements are putting them on the map and attracting students from all over the U.S.

Happening Events in Myrtle Beach

There is plenty happening here at the beach for all you fellow beach goers! If you are in the mood for some thrilling music performances…wait and see what we have in store for you! Behind the Sun (Red Hot Chili Peppers Tribute) will be performing this Tuesday at Broadway at the Beach for the Summer Concert Series! Black Label will also be performing at 8 p.m. on Thursday in Celebrity Square at Broadway!

Also on Thursday July 29th, Conway Main Street USA and the Conway Area Chamber of Commerce will be hosting a benefit concert and food drive to benefit Churches Assisting People (CAP)! Along some of the performers will be “Kids for the Community Concert- Kids Helping Kids.” These are some of the top young performers of Conway! The show will begin on the Third Avenue Stage at 7:30 p.m. Some come on out and enjoy some great entertainment all while helping a great cause!

Benefit Concert for Myrtle Beach Boys and Girls Club

Looking for fun and music, while supporting a good cause? Join us on August 1, from 2pm to 6pm at Longbread’s Bar and Grill in Carolina Forest where Musicians Network of Myrtle Beach will be sponsoring a charity BBQ event with a variety of live music from ten local musical acts, Urging all participants to donate new and used musical instruments and equipment as well as local musical technicians will be on site to donate their services for any needed repairs. As well as offering $10 BBQ tickets, all proceeds will go towards funding music classes and private lessons for the Boys and Girls Club of the Grand Strand. Tickets are now available at local supporting businesses: Andy Owings Music, Sound Systems, and Star Music. So grab your old guitar from the attic, and see the difference you can make!

Pat Benatar Performs at Broadway at the Beach

Last night was a jaw dropping night at Broadway at the Beach as, four time, Grammy Award winner, Pat Benatar performed. For those who are unfamiliar with the name, you surely would recognize her hits such as “Heartbreaker” and “Hit Me with You Best Shot”. Neil Geraldo performed alongside of Pat for the wrap up of the Fourth of July Celebration at Broadway. This performance was also part of the Summer Concert Series which will be presented at Broadway at the Beach through mid-August.

Grand Strand May Get Margaritaville Hotel

To go along with one of Broadway at the Beach’s most popular destinations, Margaritaville Restaurant, Margaritaville Management has recently suggested opening a Margaritaville Hotel along the Grand Strand. It is unclear when or where the hotel will open. The first and only Margaritaville Hotel was constructed in Pensacola, FL. The Myrtle Beach addition would be the second.

Broadway Host 4th of July Event

Broadway at the Beach will be celebrating Independence Day with a “Star Spangled Spectacular” theme, from Saturday July 3rd through Monday July 5th, 2010. Many free events will be occurring throughout the week including face painting, fireworks, balloon animals, carriage rides, mascot meet-and-greets and free concerts. In addition, contestants who participate in the Presidential trivia questions with have a chance to win free admission to the American Presidential Experience, which is the world’s largest traveling showcase of presidential memorabilia and has made Broadway at the Beach its home for the summer. So come out and put your knowledge to the test!

B Shift Wins Myrtle Beach’s Firehouse Cook-Off

Who would have guessed our local firemen can cook?? This past Saturday, the downtown farmer’s market was the hosting site of the Annual Firehouse Cook-off. The cook-off consisted of teams of three, from each shift, competing with a secret ingredient “ground beef” along with three other items available from the market vendors. It was a steep challenge, but he B shift ran though with a victorious smile. Nothing could compete with their appetizer of Roasted Tomato on Toasted Bread and Ham-wrapped Grilled Asparagus; Mini Meatloaves stuffed with a mixture of packaged stuffing, ham, spinach and mozzarella cheese; Veggie Kabobs; Grilled Potatoes in Dressing; and Almond Lace Cookies with Peach Fluff, Powdered Sugar and Chocolate.

Second place takers, the C Shift, made a Mexican inspired dish of Soft Burritos, Hard Tacos, Fruit & Vegetable Salsa, Peach Tea, and Fried Ice Cream. Lagging into last place were the cooking newbie’s, The B Shift. Among their meal were Tropical Burgers, Cantaloupe Salsa, Grilled Corn, Broccoli Slaw, Cherry Limeade, and Marshmallow Blueberry dessert. Can’t you just smell & taste it…MMMMMMMMM!!!! One contestant, Pat Piscatelli, did state that cooking for a competition is a lot more work than it looks, but in the end all was fun & games.
