According to AAA Vacations, Myrtle Beach is the second most popular travel destination for drivers over Labor Day weekend. And if you were planning to visit a coastal vacation spot near the path of Hurricane Earl, you might want to think about coming down to the Grand Strand, as it looks like the Myrtle Beach area will be spared any stormy tropical weather for the holiday. Good news for surfers – the active Atlantic hurricane season has given us larger than usual waves, so grab your board and come to the beach! Need another reason to drive the family down to the sunny seaside for a weekend away? Gas prices continue to fall, with the average price for a gallon of unleaded fuel in South Carolina at $2.44, which is down two cents from a week ago.

We’ve got the 5th Annual Beach, Boogie & BBQ Festival September 3-4, hundreds of celebrated golf courses and restaurants to choose from, and amusements including zoos, aquariums, and museums to keep the kids busy. Say goodbye to summer with a fireworks celebration at Barefoot Landing, and get there early enough to enjoy the very best shopping and dining.

Get some rest and have some fun this weekend – Happy Labor Day!

With only 5 percent of the hurricane season complete, experts are predicting an active Hurricane season for the Atlantic Coast according to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. An updated forecast released Thursday predicts 14 to 20 tropical storms to develop, including eight to twelve potentially reaching hurricane strength. With this, area residents should make plans now as to how they will deal with the tropical system threatening the coast. The peak of hurricane season, which ends November 30, is typically through late August to October. Major storms such as 1954’s Hurricane Hazel, 1989’s Hurricane Hugo, and 1999’s Hurricane Hugo all formed and impacted the Grand Strand in September and October. Other climate factors pointing to an active hurricane season are warmer-than-average water in the Atlantic and Caribbean, according to weather experts. With this, Horry County residence should take advantage of the 5 percent drop in flood insurance, going into effect October 1, 2010 when the community rating system program sets into effect. The program is an insurance rating system that recognizes communities where activities exceed the minimum Nation Flood Insurance Program’s requirements. As a result, flood insurance premium rates are discounted to reflect the reduced flood risk. About 14,000 residents who live in unincorporated areas, can expect to see a 424 discount if they are currently living in a flood zone and a $14 return for those residents who do not. If the forecast holds true, officials predict it will be the busiest season since 2005.

The first day of classes started this past Wednesday for students at Coastal Carolina University in Conway, SC. The university has spent the summer sprucing up campus housing and making improvements for returning students and welcoming the future class of 2014. In efforts to open a safer intersection for students traveling down University Boulevard, a roundabout was added to prevent from traffic delays, decrease number of accidents and to improve pedestrian safety. As the halls grew louder, and parking spaces filled, there was no doubt administration and students were getting geared up for another busy school year. Making a 4% gain in enrollment this fall compared to last years numbers, Coastal estimated a near 8,700 students are currently enrolled in fall semester. Coastal is also attracting non-traditional students such as veterans who want to earn a college degree. Many of them will be working on their studies via distance learning, due to being located in Iraq or Afghanistan. With this, G.I. Jobs Magazine recently named CCU a “Military Friendly School for 2011”, which puts Coastal in the top 15% out of 7,000 schools nationwide who are committed to educating military veterans. In efforts to make a strong push to increase courses and services for veterans, it has also contributed and tripled in participants in the ROTC program at Coastal over the past 2 years. All together, Coastal Carolina improvements are putting them on the map and attracting students from all over the U.S.
